The UEFA Champion League Must Go On

This is the 66th season of the 2020-21 Champion League organized by the UEFA. The Champion League is in its 29th season after they were renamed. They were originally the European Champion Clubs’ Cup before its naming to UEFA Champion League.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, the UEFA announce in April 2020 that the time frame for the matches has been postponed until further notice. Letters were sent to the different associations stating that all domestic leagues must play to qualify for the European competitions. On April 21, 2021, there was a meeting between UEFA and the fifty-five UEFA associations in which they were encouraged to complete a domestic top league and cup competition. Amidst the challenges, UEFA would develop a guideline for its club competitions in case of a canceled league or cup after a brief meeting on April 23, 2020. The drawing for the competitions was held at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The games were scheduled to begin in June 2020 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, it was rescheduled for August 2020.

The final was played at Estadio do Dragao in Porto, Portugal between Chelsea and Manchester City (see 축구중계). Chelsea won the match by beating Manchester 1-0. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic in Europe, the 2020 UEFA Champions League Final was moved from Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey to the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon. This year Lisbon was the host for the finals, however, United Kingdom was not accepting any tourists from designated countries such as Turkey. England could not host it, so they return to Estadio do Dragao where they played last year. The defending champions Bayern Munich was defeated by Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals. This is a reverse from the previous year. The 2020-21 UEFA Champion League winner Chelsea will be playing against the 2020-21 winner of the UEFA Europa League Villarreal in the 2021 UEFA Super Cup. They will be representing Europe in the 2021 FIFA Club World in Japan.

There is a fifty-five-member association that makes up the UEFA. Fifty-Four members participate in the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League totaling seventy-nine teams. The only one that did not perform is Liechtenstein because they did not have any domestic league. The UEFA country coefficients are used to know the teams that will be participating from each association.

Four teams are qualified from associations One to Four. Three teams from associations Five to Six. Two teams from associations Seven to Fifteen and from associations Sixteen to Fifty-five one team except for Liechtenstein. 2019-20 UEFA Champions League and 2019-20 UEFA Europa League winners were given additional entry, if they did not qualify for the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League during their domestic league.
